Philippines

Risk level Moderate
Dive destination Yes — Tubbataha, Palawan, Visayas
Nearest capable trauma care Manila / Cebu
Seasonal factor Typhoons, roughly June–November

Risk Overview

The Philippines offers superb diving distributed across islands whose medical capability rarely matches their beauty. Typhoon season disrupts travel and can strand visitors on smaller islands for days. Certain areas of western Mindanao and the Sulu archipelago carry kidnap and terrorism risk and are advised against; the main tourist regions are far from these areas but the distinction matters when reading advisories. Road and ferry safety standards vary widely.

Medical Infrastructure

Manila and Cebu hold the capable private facilities. Island destinations — Palawan, Siargao, the smaller Visayas — offer clinic-level care at best, and Tubbataha liveaboards operate a day or more from any facility. Chamber availability exists in a handful of locations, with the usual caveat that listed and operational are different things. Serious cases from the islands stage through Cebu or Manila almost by definition.

Entry Requirements

Most nationalities receive visa-free entry for short tourist stays, with an eTravel registration requirement. Verify current requirements before travel.

Altitude and Dive Notes

Build typhoon slack into island itineraries between June and November, and treat ferry cancellations as safety information rather than inconvenience. For Tubbataha, the remoteness is absolute during the season: confirm the liveaboard's emergency plan and communications before boarding.
