Risk: ModerateTien Shan trekking where the response network is you until we arrive.
Read GuideIndonesia's scale is its risk profile. The premier dive regions — Raja Ampat, Komodo, the Banda Sea — sit days from definitive care, liveaboards operate far from any response network, and scooter accidents in Bali remain the most common serious incident among visitors. Add active volcanoes that close airports with ash, and earthquake exposure across the archipelago. None of this argues against the trip; all of it argues for a response plan that thinks in geography.
Jakarta and Bali (Denpasar) hold the best domestic capability, but complex cases from anywhere in Indonesia frequently transfer to Singapore, the regional standard of care. In the eastern islands, capability is minimal. Chamber locations are sparse relative to the diving, and operational status varies; verifying a working, staffed chamber before committing a DCI patient to a long transfer is core operations work.
Visa on arrival and e-VOA options serve most nationalities for tourism. Verify current requirements, including any regional rules for Papua provinces, before travel.
Dive conservatively in remote regions: the distance to a chamber converts marginal profiles into serious gambles. On liveaboards, confirm the vessel's oxygen supply and emergency communications before departure. In Bali, helmet quality and road choice do more for your safety than anything else on the island.
